Using the Standards for Excellence as a Proactive Accountability Tool.
Topics include: (1) a summary of legislative activities, both state and
federal, that could impact the financial and legal operations of the
nonprofit sector; (2) examples of voluntary “best practices” that nonprofit
organizations have implemented as a response to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of
2002; 3) review of specific “financial and legal” best practices as outlined
in the Standards for Excellence Ethics and Accountability Code along with
“common” shortfalls found in conducting the certification process.

January 6 Town Hall Meeting Harrisburg
January 5-10 PANO hosted a
delegation from Japan.
On January 10, PANO staff and
volunteers watched the Japanese delegation of nonprofit leaders depart from
Harrisburg International Airport. Over the coming weeks, PANO will strive to
build upon these relationships and bring this benefit to our members and our
Commonwealth. From January 3 through January 10, PANO hosted a delegation of
12 nonprofit Leaders from Niigata, Japan. During their brief stay in
Central Pennsylvania, the delegation strived to learn from the successes and
challenges of our Nonprofit Sector. PANO would like to extend our most
sincere appreciation to all who helped make this experience rewarding,
enriching and truly memorable. These Japanese delegates have returned home
safely to running their respective nonprofit charities in Niigata Japan.
Their challenge ahead is large.
Their Agenda.

Standards for Excellence: “Preventing the ‘Where Was the Board?’
Question from Surfacing in a Nonprofit Organization.” After three years of
operation in Pennsylvania, the Standards for Excellence program is making an
impact on participating organizations – both staff and board - while at the
same time surfacing common challenges in ethics and accountability practices
of nonprofit organizations. This session will focus on practical ways to
address the increasing need for educating staff and board in appropriate
“best practices” as well as serving as a “wake up call” to ensure prevention
of improprieties
